Cashmere does not have to be dry cleaned. With proper care, it can be washed at home. For products specially formulated to be effective yet gentle on cashmere and other fine fabrics, shop our selection of garment care products.
Machine Washing
Machine wash only with cool water in a delicate cycle with any brand of cashmere shampoo. It's best to protect cashmere garments with a mesh bag. Wash items inside out to minimize pilling. Do not put cashmere in the dryer.
Remember: fine items are truly more protected when hand washed in a nice tepid bath and dried flat to keep their natural shape.
Hand Washing
If the cashmere is stained, pre-treat any stain with stain solution. Help the stain solution penetrate into the stain, but do not rub the garment--just use your thumb to penetrate the treatment into the yarn.
- Pour room temperature water in a basin.
- Add a few squirts of any brand of cashmere shampoo.
- Agitate the water and detergent by hand to mix.
- Add sweater to water basin.
- Move the sweater in the water for a minute by hand.
- Let it soak for at least a half hour.
Leaving the sweater soaking over night will not harm it.
If you see color in the water, do not panic. This is totally normal, especially with black or dark items. This is the yarn dye and you will not notice any loss of color at the end. All dyed yarns release color.
- Run room temperature water into basin to rinse out soapy water, run water until soapy water is gone.
- Take soaking wet sweater out of the basin. Do not wring the sweater.
- Lay towel over flat surface and place sweater completely flat on the towel.
- Roll the sweater up in towel (like a rolling pin) to remove the water.
- Lay sweater flat on drying rack or on a towel.
- Do not expect to wear the item the same day as washing. Allow to dry overnight.
*To help speed up the drying process, you may have to use a more than one towel and do this several times to get as much water out of the sweater as possible. We recommend a using a drying rack with a flat mesh surface. This helps sweater dry faster than drying on a towel. Sweater will dry overnight if on a mesh drying rack. On a towel it might take longer because you have to flip it.
- When sweater is dry simply fold it or wear it.
